IEEE Moi University Entrepreneurship Group

Mission:
To foster a culture of ingenuity, innovation and entreprenuership among youth in Kenya's Rift Valley Region.
Time Horizon:
More Than Two Years
Main Activities:
1. Ideation and Problem-Solving Workshops The group should move students from passive learning to active problem-solving through: Design Thinking Sprints: Structured sessions that teach students how to identify real-world "pain points" and develop user-centric solutions. Reverse Engineering Challenges: Analyzing existing local technologies to brainstorm ingenious ways to optimize them for emerging markets. 2. Innovation Showcases and MVP Development To encourage a culture of "building," the group should facilitate the transition from concept to prototype: Minimum Viable Product (MVP) Challenges: Short-term competitions focused on building functional prototypes that solve a specific problem with minimal resources. Demo Days: Providing a platform for student innovators to present their prototypes to a panel of experts, receiving feedback on technical feasibility and market fit. 3. Entrepreneurial Foundations and Business Modeling Fostering entrepreneurship requires training in the "language" of business: Business Model Workshops: Teaching students how to use frameworks like the Business Model Canvas to map out value propositions, revenue streams, and cost structures. Intellectual Property (IP) Clinics: Sessions on the importance of patents, trademarks, and the ethical implications of technological innovation. 4. Interdisciplinary Networking and Co-Founder Matchmaking Innovation thrives when different skill sets collide: Cross-Faculty Mixers: Events that pair technical students (Engineering/CS) with those from business, economics, or social science backgrounds to form balanced startup teams. Alumni Mentorship: Connecting current students with alumni entrepreneurs who can share relatable experiences and practical industry insights. 5. Communication and Pitching Masterclasses A core part of the mission is enabling students to advocate for their ideas: Pitch Competitions: Training students to deliver concise, compelling "elevator pitches" to potential partners or investors. Technical Storytelling: Workshops on translating complex technical specifications into narratives that resonate with non-technical stakeholders and the public. 6. Ecosystem Integration and External Pathways The group acts as a gateway to the broader professional and entrepreneurial world: Hub and Incubator Tours: Organizing visits and creating pathways to local technology hubs and business accelerators. Policy and Regional Integration Panels: Discussing how emerging trade agreements and digital policies create new opportunities for young tech entrepreneurs to scale their innovations.
